Music Theory | Theme and Variation - Musical Form Part 1

This is the first in series of episodes that focus on Music Form. In this episode we will discuss one of the formal techniques of variation called Theme and Variation. 'Theme and variation' structure generally begins with a theme typically between eight and thirty-two bars in length; each variation, particularly in music of the Classical Period and earlier, will be of the same length and structure as the theme. Jazz is actually a form of theme and variations. Jazz standards are typically 32 bars in an AABA form and the improvisations occur after the melody is stated once or twice. The performer will typically improvise over the chord progression of the entire song and then start over at the top.
