It wasn’t Elvis's idea. The producer, Chips Moman, was furious when a studio engineer changed the mix behind his back to add that sudden fade-out/fade-in, thinking it would sound great on the radio. Although the producer hated it, the label kept it, and it became one of the most famous and unique endings in rock history!
