58. [Genesis 45:5] Free Will and God's Providence in the Joseph Story

"You sold me here" — "but God sent me." In Genesis 45, both are true at once, and Joseph won't let go of either one. It's one of Scripture's oldest tensions: the free choices of people and the unstoppable plan of God. How did Joseph end up in Egypt? Was it his brothers' cruelty — or God's providence? Joseph's own answer is yes, both. "Do not be grieved... because you sold me here, for God sent me before you to preserve life." This message walks the whole chain of "coincidences" that carried Joseph to Egypt — a father's errand, a mysterious stranger in a field, Judah's plan to sell him, a passing caravan of traders — and shows how human sin and divine deliverance run side by side without canceling each other out. The brothers' plan was evil; God's plan was rescue. And God's plan was never a mystery: from Genesis 3:15 onward He has promised a seed, a remnant, a deliverance — and nothing the humans do can thwart it. The same double truth meets us at the cross (Acts 2:23): handed over by God's set plan, and nailed there by lawless hands. So what do we do? Rest in the promise first — then, freed by it, walk diligently into the life God invites us to share (2 Peter 1).
