Do Zoos Help Conservation? The Truth About Research, Ethics & Wildlife Careers
Do zoos actually help conservation? Contribute to real research? Or are they mostly there to entertain people? Zoos have come a long way from just putting animals in cages, but some still have a long way to go. In this episode of the Fancy Scientist Podcast, I break down the HUGE spectrum of zoos from dilapidated roadside attractions to high-quality institutions running genuine conservation science. I talk about how some zoos contribute to such efforts through captive breeding programs, real research, and by educating the public. I share the signs that separate ethical zoos from unethical ones, as well as the gray areas in between, and also discuss why some are against zoos no matter what. Finally, I end with an overview of the different kinds of careers available to aspiring wildlife professionals at zoos. Specifically, I go over: The history of zoos, and how they evolved from pure entertainment into institutions that can contribute to research, education, and conservation The clear signs of an ethical zoo, including enrichment, keeper barriers, and whether the public is allowed to touch wild animals Why Tiger King-style roadside zoos like Myrtle Beach Safari don't count as real conservation work, and how to spot greenwashing Real conservation success stories through captive breeding, including golden lion tamarins and black-footed ferrets Behind-the-scenes zoo research visitors never see, including my own experience monitoring elephant hormones as a Disney's Animal Kingdom intern Whether zoos actually change visitor attitudes and behavior toward conservation The strongest arguments against zoos A full overview of wildlife career paths at zoos such as zookeeping, education, communications, research, and more And more!
