The German state is estimated to lose up to €200 billion annually due to tax fraud, with organized gangs becoming increasingly creative. The federal government intends to tackle this massive problem with a new action plan, as Federal Justice Minister Stefanie Hubig warned at its presentation today. Every euro evaded is missing from vital areas such as schools, the police, the railways, and the justice system, depriving the public of its essential resources. The action plan focuses primarily on organized tax crime, money laundering through cryptocurrencies, VAT fraud, and large offshore assets abroad. To combat these phenomena, authorities will conduct cross-border investigations in a joint center against tax and financial crime. They will also be granted greater access to data to better understand complex corporate structures. The maximum penalty for organized tax crime will be increased to 15 years' imprisonment, and voluntary disclosure will no longer lead to immunity from prosecution, even if filed in a timely manner. Companies will also be able to report their revenues electronically. SPD Chancellor Lars Klingbeil emphasized that the clear goal is to ensure that honest citizens are not the ones who suffer, and that it is about justice, since the few fraudsters harm everyone and destroy fair competition between companies.
