December 1967. Tahar Zbiri — colonel from the Aurès Mountains, first Chief of Staff of the ANP (People's National Army), a resistance fighter from the very beginning — marches on Algiers with 1,500 men and 30 armored vehicles. His statement to Boumédiène before the break: "We didn't get rid of Ben Bella to reproduce Ben Bella's policies." Boumédiène's response: to send the air force to bomb his own soldiers in El Affroun. It was Zbiri himself — in June 1965 — who had arrested Ben Bella on Boumédiène's orders. Two years later, he was sentenced to death by the man for whom he had acted. What Zbiri's memoirs, the works of Harbi and Meynier, and the Maitron biographical notice document is the last armed attempt by the resistance fighters inside the country to reclaim the revolution they had waged— against the border army which hadn't fired a shot for years.
