Kozacha Lopan in the Derhachi community, the village on the north border between Ukraine and Russia, became one of the first occupied settlements following the Russian invasion. Ukrainian troops liberated it after 8 months under Russian control on September 11, 2022. "There is no Russian world here; Kozacha Lopan always was part of Ukraine," said the head of the Derhachi community, Vyacheslav Zadorenko, commenting on the first news after deoccupation But since the liberation, Russia has started to shell the village with different types of weapons like artillery, drones, missiles, and glide bombs. Sometimes, Kozacha Lopan was under attack 20 times in a single day. In May 2024, Russia started a new offensive in the Kharkiv region. Even though Russia didn't carry offensive actions on the village, the situation with the shelling got worse. The authorities are urging residents to evacuate from the settlement, but nearly 800 people still live there. The Gwara journalist visited Kozacha Lopan and covered how the police helped evacuate village residents.
