The beginning of a new history is only newly drawn through the death of a former leader. Just as the Book of Joshua began with the death of Moses, and the Book of Judges began with the death of Joshua, anticipating a new era of God’s grace, 2 Samuel, with the death of Saul, shows that a new reign of God will be established through the new leader, David. However, David is not rejoicing or relieved by Saul’s death. Instead, he is heartbroken and mourns. This is because Saul was not merely David’s enemy, but was God’s anointed king of the kingdom. David is deeply saddened by the collapse of the kingdom of God, rather than by personal feelings. This is what it means. This should be the heart of us Christians, looking at the times. In this age, which knows no pain, in this time when we feel no pain, we empathize with God's aching heart, and pray for the healing of this age, for recovery. Our God desires that the end of the year be one in which we pray.
