First Reading (Wis 12:13, 16-19) A reading from the Book of Wisdom. 13 There is no God besides you who cares for all things, to whom you must show that your judgment was not unjust. 16 Your strength is the source of your justice, and your dominion over all makes you indulgent toward all. 17 You show your strength to those who do not believe in the perfection of your power; and in those who know you, you punish their presumption. 18 Yet, mastering your own strength, you judge with mercy and govern us with great consideration: for whenever you wish, it is within your power to use your authority. 19 By so doing, you have taught your people that the just must be humane; and to your children you have given the comforting hope that you grant forgiveness to sinners.
