How Humans Invented Heaven (A Sociological Breakdown of Religion)

What if heaven was never really about the sky? In this video, I break down religion from a sociological perspective and explore how humans invented, imagined, organized, and transformed the idea of heaven over time. Before heaven became a destination after death, it was the unknown above us — the symbolic place where humans located power, meaning, judgment, blessing, disaster, destiny, and divine instruction. Across human history, the heavens evolved as human societies evolved. What was once unimaginable became mysterious. What was mysterious became meaningful. What became meaningful became organized. Then the gods became more human, the heavens became more accessible, and eventually heaven became the promised destination of faithful humanity. But from a sociological perspective, this raises an important question: does religion reveal the divine, or does it reveal us? As a former pastor who deconverted while studying social science, I now see religion less as revelation and more as anthropology. Religious stories may not tell us much about the unknown, but they tell us a lot about where we have been as humans: what we feared, what we valued, how we organized power, how we explained suffering, and how we imagined higher forms of life together. This is a sociological breakdown of heaven, religion, gods, afterlife beliefs, social order, human consciousness, and the evolution of religious imagination. If you are deconstructing religion, questioning Christianity, exploring atheism, studying sociology, or trying to understand why humans create gods, this conversation is for you.
