PROVENCE - Streifzüge zwischen Avignon und Aix-en-Provence

A ten-day trip to Provence, with excursions between Avignon and Aix-en-Provence, takes us to the Vaucluse department with a side trip to Bouches-du-Rhône. From our base near Pernes-les-Fontaines, our first destinations are Carpentras and Avignon on the Rhône River, with its medieval papal residence. We visit Vaison-la-Romaine, once settled by the Romans, and circumnavigate the small mountain range of the Dentelles de Montmirail west of Mont Ventoux. Starting at the impressive karst spring of the Sorgue River in Fontaine-de-Vaucluse, we cross the Vaucluse highlands to the famous Cistercian abbey of Sénanque and continue via the picturesque hilltop villages of Gordes and Joucas into the ochre-rich region of Roussillon. ] Also through the Vaucluse highlands, we travel via Venasque and Villes-sur-Auzon through the Nesque Gorge, which is up to 400 meters deep, to Monieux. In Sault, we turn towards Mont Ventoux and return to our starting point via Bedoin and Mazan. Between the Vaucluse plateau and the Luberon mountain range, in the Calavon Valley, lies the town of Apt. Here, we visit the large Saturday market, considered one of the most beautiful in Provence. Our final tour takes us to Aix-en-Provence, the historic capital of Provence, located south of the Durance River in the Bouches-du-Rhône department. After a tour of this first city on Gallic soil, founded by the Romans, we cross the Luberon Mountains and return to our accommodation via the charming towns of Lourmarin, Bonnieux, and Ménerbes. Between the Vaucluse plateau and the Luberon mountain range lies the town of Apt in the Calavon Valley. Here, we visit the large Saturday market, considered one of the most beautiful in Provence.
