A Career with the SBI

The North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation (SBI) is a state law enforcement agency, established in 1937, that conducts criminal investigations across the state of North Carolina. As a state law enforcement agency, the SBI provides assistance to local law enforcement agencies, but has original jurisdiction in the following areas: drug and arson investigations, environmental crimes, election law violations, human trafficking, weapons of mass destruction, child sexual abuse in day care centers, computer crimes against children and crimes involving state property. The SBI headquarters is located in Raleigh with eight district offices across the state. The SBI also has a non-sworn staff who work in various roles to support our sworn staff including IT, crime scene and intelligence analysts. Among their many roles, our civilian staff oversee the fingerprinting and background check database and the sex offender registry while also providing training to other law enforcement agencies.
