Henry Tylbor on Merleau-Ponty | New York Studio School

Selections from the Archive: Henry Tylbor " Merleau-Ponty: Embodiment and Painting" recorded on December 13, 1994. Henry Tylbor was an independent scholar whose many interests were linguistics, neuropsychology, history, and studies in philosophy including phenomenology. He was one of the youngest survivors of the Warsaw ghetto uprising and multiple concentration camps. Later he settled in New York and wrote a series of stories on pre-war Warsaw and the war years. He had a penchant for languages and spoke seven fluently and attended classes with the influential Russian linguist Roman Jakobson at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). At that time, Tylbor was persuaded to study with Professor A.J. Greimas at the University of Paris. While he was in Paris, he became interested in neuropsychology and went to Saint-Anne Hospital Center to study aphasia, which affects memory loss. He has translated many foreign books as well as travelled in Europe to search for European authors for Harcourt Brace Jovanovich, Inc. He was the co-author of an article “On the Necessity of Collusion in Conversation” in the book “Dialogic Emergence of Culture", published by University of Illinois Press. During these years, he lectured at many major universities including Brown University, Duke University and the University of Pennsylvania on the experience of war. Please consider making a gift to the Evening Lecture Series. Your donation will support the Series’ ongoing twice-weekly discussions of contemporary art and art history, which are free and open to all. https://nyss.org/support/donate/ . The Evening Lecture Series has been an integral part of New York Studio School’s programming since its founding in the 1960s. An intensive studio arts program that values artists learning from artists, working from perception, and the practice of drawing as the most direct means of translating one’s ideas or experiences, NYSS offers an array of full-time and part-time programs that prioritize in-depth dialogue with dedicated instructors. Programs are offered in-person for those based in New York City and in virtual formats to enable real-time participation for artists around the world. Visit nyss.org to enroll in classes, learn about the MFA degree and three-year Certificate program, see what’s on view in the Gallery, register for upcoming lectures, and more. Learn about our full-time and part-time programs: https://nyss.org/academics/ The NYSS Evening Lecture Series is supported in part by public funds from the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs in partnership with the City Council, and also by an award from the National Endowment for the Arts. This online archive is funded in part by the Robert Lehman Foundation, the Samuel H. Kress Foundation, and many individual contributors. NYSS is deeply grateful for the support of its programs.
