Facing El Niño Godzilla, Government Ensures Readiness of National Food Reserves and Agricultural Infrastructure President Prabowo Subianto summoned Minister of Agriculture Andi Amran Sulaiman to the Merdeka Palace in Jakarta on Thursday, June 18, 2026. During the meeting, the government confirmed the availability of national food stocks and the readiness of agricultural infrastructure to face the potential impacts of the El Niño Godzilla climate phenomenon. In his statement after the meeting, Minister Amran explained that national rice reserves as of June 2026 reached approximately 5.2 million tons. According to him, this amount is sufficient to meet national needs for the next few months. "Then, rice in hotels, homes, and restaurants is approximately 12.5 million tons. This means that with these reserves, all three of them can last for the next 10-11 months. If we assume the lowest is 10 months, that means until April. July to April is the next 10 months," he added. In addition to food reserves, Minister Amran stated that the government has also ensured the readiness of various agricultural infrastructure as a mitigation measure against the risks of El Niño Godzilla. These efforts include the construction of reservoirs, pumped irrigation, deep wells, pumping programs, land optimization, and the creation of new rice fields. "We have built reservoirs, then pumped irrigation, then deep wells, then pumping, and land optimization. We are converting swampy areas that usually have one harvest into two and three. We will continue with the creation of rice fields. All of this can mitigate risks. Once again, God willing, for food security," he explained. Regarding the livestock sector, Minister Amran stated that the government is also continuing to maintain stable egg prices through collaboration with various parties, from farmers to the National Nutrition Agency (BGN). "We immediately called the head of BGN and conveyed that if the usual consumption of eggs per week were to increase to three times, including chicken, prices would start to creep up, and we all agreed to that," he said. Furthermore, Minister Amran explained that the government is also continuing to accelerate the downstreaming program in the horticultural sector, including coffee, coconut, and sugarcane. In addition, the government will continue distributing various forms of assistance to the regions to support accelerated development in the agricultural sector. "We've already done this with our colleagues in 2025, and we'll continue in 2026 and 2027. The total area for farmers is 870,000 hectares, including land in Papua and all regencies in Papua," he explained. "We're providing Rp3.2 trillion in assistance there this year, Rp2 trillion last year, for a total of over Rp5.5 trillion. We reported this to the President, and he said to continue this assistance. This is direct assistance to the people. This assistance includes grants, tractors, and rice fields. Several provinces have even requested additional rice fields, including West Papua and others. We're increasing this," he concluded. With strong food reserves and continuously strengthened agricultural infrastructure, along with direct support for farmers, the government is optimistic that Indonesia can weather the threat of El Niño Godzilla while maintaining national food stability and public welfare.
