Finland, a country of mysterious charm located on the Scandinavian Peninsula in Northern Europe! Famous for Santa Claus and xylitol, Finland is also known as the "Land of Lakes" due to its tens of thousands of lakes. With 90% of its land covered in forests, it boasts clean air and pristine natural landscapes. Even in Finland, which appears so peaceful, there is a place where one can catch a glimpse of the intense realities of life: the ports of southern Finland. Finland borders the Baltic Sea, where biting cold winds blow—strong enough to quickly freeze the fishermen's hands red. The main species caught in the Baltic Sea are two: the predator of the sea, the king crab, and the herring, the fish beloved by Europeans. - There is a fisherman busily setting out his nets; he is Mr. Heiki, who has walked the path of herring fishing for generations. Heading out to sea from a port in southern Finland, Mr. Heiki is the region's top herring fisherman, boasting fantastic teamwork with his nephew, Mr. Virtanen! When his nephew, Mr. Virtanen, locates a school of herring using a fish finder, Mr. Heikki skillfully lowers and pulls up the nets to catch them. As always, the two set out early at dawn to fish for herring. The reason for their busy outing is to participate in the fish market held in the Turku region. Mr. Heikki and Mr. Virtanen are burning with passion for fishing until the very end to sell their herring here. Having set out for the Baltic Sea with solid gear, will the two be able to expect a bountiful catch under the blue sky today? - Mr. Brecht, who catches king crabs, uses woven net traps, and the king crabs coming up in each net are quite substantial in size. For king crabs, which are cold-water species that prefer cold temperatures, the waters off Finland are truly the best habitat! Consequently, the traps pulled up are also full. Mr. Brecht says that he is able to make a living thanks to the sea, describing the Baltic Sea as a precious space. - The seas of Finland, a polar region, cool year-round and enter a state of sea ice. In such cases, going out to sea for fishing by boat poses a safety risk and is considered nearly impossible... Yet, there is a man busily heading somewhere with bait and line fishing gear; he is a fisherman ice fishing in the coastal lagoon where the frozen lake meets the sea. Although it might seem easy to fish without going out on a boat, he must endure the cold and wait for a bite because he has to drill through ice nearly 20 cm thick to catch fish. After casting his line and waiting for quite some time, the fisherman feels a faint bite in his hand!
