While the language of this psalm is intense, it teaches us a vital lesson: when we are wronged, we don't have to take matters into our own hands. We can hand the "case" over to God. As you listen, remember that while we are called to love our personal enemies, we can boldly pray for God to defend the cause of truth and protect the innocent from those who seek their ruin. 1. The Cry of the Persecuted (vv. 1-6, 11-16) David begins by asking God to "contend with those who contend" with him. He describes enemies who seek his soul and lay traps for him without cause. Most heartbreakingly, he notes that when they were sick, he fasted and prayed for them as if they were his own brothers. Yet, in his own adversity, they gathered together to mock him. David’s experience reminds us that even when we do good, we may face "foul play" from the world. 2. A Plea for Deliverance and Comfort (vv. 7-10, 17-22) David pleads his innocence, noting that he never provoked this hatred. He asks the Lord, "How long wilt thou look on?" He begs God to rescue his soul from these "lions" and to be "nigh" unto him. Despite the darkness of the moment, David promises that once he is delivered, his "soul shall be joyful in the Lord" and his very bones will cry out, "Lord, who is like unto thee?" 3. The Righteous Judge Takes the Bench (vv. 23-26) David calls for God to "stir up" Himself and awake to his judgment. He asks for a definitive sentence that would disappoint the expectations of his enemies. He prays that those who "magnify themselves" against him would be clothed with shame, while the Lord’s justice is vindicated in the sight of all. 4. A Future of Praise (vv. 18, 27-28) The psalm concludes with a shift from the battlefield to the sanctuary. David promises to give God thanks in the "great congregation." He prays for his friends to shout for joy and for his tongue to speak of God’s righteousness and praise "all the day long." He moves from the pain of the present to the certainty of a future where God is glorified. The Christ Connection Psalm 35 is a profound "type" of the life of Jesus Christ. In fact, Jesus quoted verse 19 ("They hated me without a cause") to describe His own rejection by the world (John 15:25). Like David, Jesus was falsely accused by "unrighteous witnesses" who rewarded Him evil for good. While David prayed for the destruction of his enemies, Jesus (the perfect David) prayed, "Father, forgive them." By taking the "ruin" of the Cross upon Himself, Jesus pleaded the cause of all humanity. When we sing this psalm, we recognize that God has already won the ultimate victory over the "public enemies" of Christ’s kingdom.
