Job 20: The Triumph of the Wicked is Short - Zophar’s Final Stand (Audio Bible) You might think that Job’s incredible "I know that my Redeemer liveth" speech in the last chapter would have softened his friends' hearts. Instead, it seems they didn't even hear him. In Chapter 20, Zophar the Naamathite enters the arena for the last time. He is "hot" and "hasty," driven by a spirit that feels insulted by Job’s defense. Zophar’s entire discourse is focused on one relentless theme: the certain ruin of the wicked. He uses lofty expressions and vivid imagery to describe the misery of those who live for themselves. While his descriptions are technically "sound doctrine" regarding God's justice, his fatal flaw is the same as the others - he assumes that because Job is suffering, Job must be the villain of the story. 1. A Short and Hasty Preface (vv. 1-3) Zophar doesn't waste time with pleasantries. He admits that his "haste" and his "thoughts" cause him to answer. He feels he has heard a "check" or a rebuke that puts him to shame, and his spirit of understanding compels him to strike back. This section is a powerful reminder of how easy it is to speak out of irritation rather than out of love or a search for the truth. 2. The Short-Lived Joy of the Hypocrite (vv. 4-9) Zophar asserts that since the beginning of time, the "triumphing of the wicked is short." He describes a man whose "excellency mounts up to the heavens," only to perish forever like his own dung. He compares the wicked man to a dream that flies away or a vision of the night that is chased off by the morning sun. To Zophar, the higher a wicked man climbs, the harder and surer his fall will be. 3. The Bitter Fruit of Greed (vv. 10-29) In a long and graphic lecture, Zophar lists the miseries that await the ungodly. He speaks of a diseased body where "bones are full of the sin of his youth," a troubled conscience, and a ruined estate. He describes the "poison of asps" and the "vipers' tongue." He paints a picture of a man who swallows down riches only to vomit them up again. The chapter concludes by declaring that "the heaven shall reveal his iniquity" and that this is the "portion of a wicked man from God." The Christ Connection Zophar speaks of the wicked man being forced to "restore" what he has taken and "vomit up" the riches he swallowed. This points us to the work of Jesus Christ, but in a way Zophar never expected. While we were the ones who had "swallowed down" sin and iniquity, Jesus was the one who paid the price of restoration. On the Cross, He drank the "gall" and the "poison" of divine wrath that Zophar describes, so that we wouldn't have to. Zophar said the "heaven shall reveal his iniquity," but for those in Christ, the heavens reveal only the righteousness of the Son. Understanding God's Justice: Considering the ultimate end of those who persist in evil without repentance.
