Exhibition film: Forrest Bess
Take a look back! From February 15 to September 6, 2020, the Fridericianum presented the first exhibition for over three decades of Forrest Bess’s work in Germany. Through over seventy works on loan from institutions and private collections, Bess’s development was traced, from his more conventional, figurative formulations to the visionary paintings that comprise the main body of his work. By way of an accompaniment, the artist’s biography was carefully mapped out via selected correspondence and other ephemera, thus providing background information to his theoretical approaches to painting and his ideas on hermaphroditism. On the occasion of the exhibition, the Fridericianum produced a seventeen-minute film, which is a multifaceted documentation of this retrospective.
