The Walk - EP 154 - The Baker, The Outlaw, & The Virgin Mary - A 900 Year Old Tale - Dale Abbey

Ayup! In the year 1130 AD, a Derby baker called Cornelius had a dream in which the Virgin Mary appeared to him and told him to serve God "in the Deep Dale through hunger, thirst, coldness and nakedness". He gave up all his belongings and walked out in to the countryside until he stumbled upon some rocks. He began carving the stone into a dwelling and lived here until he died many years later. Around this time, an infamous outlaw was camping in the valley, when God appeared to him in a dream and told him to change his ways. He did, and that gave Creedence to the idea that there was something quite special about this location. In 1199 an Abbey was build a few yards away from his 'Hermitage' and stood until Henry VIII destroyed the monasteries in 1539. I am in Dale Abbey to explore the remains of the abbey, and the incredible 900 year old hermitage.
