The Walk - EP 139 - The Rock Thrown By The Devil & The Lions On The Motorway - West Nottinghamshire
Hello folks! Welcome out on another explore in this great nation. I'm back with Phil, Ande and Jake, and it's a slightly different one this week. Ande has mapped out a 12 mile circular bike ride around West Nottinghamshire, that includes some great historical elements, as well as some bizarre ones! We start off in Awsworth on the former Midland Railway Babbington Colliery branch, before moving onto the 1820 Babbington Colliery tramway, We head into Swingate where we look at Swingate water tower, an amazing structure built after the Second World War as a water supply to the city of Nottingham. We then follow an old tramway out of the former Kimberley Colliery until we reach the M1 motorway where we discover four lions, in an enclosure, next to the motorway. From there we head down to the village of Strelley, and the 14th century stones of the Monks Way. We then cut over the hills until we reach Bramcote Park and the Hemlock Stone. An enormous stack that was believed in Medieval times, to have been thrown by the devil, from Peak Cavern in Derbyshire, in an attempt to destroy the church bells of a nearby abbey. In the final leg, we follow the past of the long lost Nottingham Canal, all the way back to our start point, on the outskirts of Ilkeston. A mixed bag that I hope you enjoy!
