Hiking the Amatola Trail

One of South Africa's toughest hutted hikes - the Amatola Trail - takes you 100km through the Amatola Mountains in Hogsback, Eastern Cape. This hike requires a decent level of fitness as you traverse for 6 days up and down the mountains, through dense indigenous forest, up along plateaus with endless vistas, and around spectacular roaring waterfalls. Day 1: Maden Lake to Gwili Gwili hut 11.9km, 763m ascent Day 2: Gwili Gwili Hut to Dontsa Hut 19.14km, 633m ascent Day 3: Dontsa Hut to Cata Hut 20.62km, 1024m ascent Day 4: Cata Hut to Mnyameni Hut 14.56km, 634m ascent Day 5: Mnyameni Hut to Zingcuka Hut 19.42km, 991m ascent Day 6: Zingcuka Hut to Tyume River/accommodation 16.2km, 855m ascent
