Italy’s Michelangelo Dome: A New Layer in Europe’s Air Defense?
Italy has unveiled the Michelangelo Dome, a software-driven air- and missile-defense architecture designed by Leonardo to unify the country’s land, sea, air, and space assets into one coordinated shield. Instead of a physical dome, the system functions as a digital layer that fuses radar, satellite, naval sensors, cyber tools, and command centers to counter threats ranging from drones and cruise missiles to ballistic and hypersonic systems. With AI-enabled data processing and open interfaces, Michelangelo aims to streamline Europe’s fragmented air-defense landscape, enhance NATO interoperability, and protect major cities and infrastructure, with incremental rollout planned toward 2028.
