The horror of pause squats: what can you do to make deep squatting harder still?? Pause them at the bottom for a distinctive beat. Our school of strength is all about 'disadvantaging' lifts. What can be done to make the core absolute strength exercises, the competitive lifts, more difficult so that when done in competition the lifts are easier? Pause squatting takes all the rebound, all the stretch reflex and momentum out of the squat. Pause squatting locks in a lifters depth, it teaches the lifter has to generate explosiveness out of nothingness. Pause squatting makes competitive squatting seem like a week at beach. I used pause squats to help young, wild, Kirk Karwoski groove in his world record-setting technique. Zen Kirk once described his squat style as "Pause squatting without the pause." That from the Grand Maestro of Squat. I took this video at Don Berry's country gym this past Sunday. The boys are deep in their off-season. I shot this exemplary pause set video of Nick "the Italian Kid" (AKA Lumpy) as he hit 405 x 5 raw. Despite his Orc-ish physique he is intelligible. This mini-Kirk will finish out his 5 rep top sets next week with 420. Then onto 3 rep sets hopefully ending in the 460-470 range. His ultimate off-season goal is 500x1 paused. Then back to pause-squatting-without-the pause for some competitive ass-kicking.
