KOMPAS.TV - The United States military launched a new attack on Iran on Wednesday morning (July 8, 2026), hours after three merchant ships were attacked in the Strait of Hormuz. This attack threatens the peace agreement aimed at ending the fighting between the US and Iran. The new attack is believed to further complicate negotiations aimed at fully reopening the Strait of Hormuz, restoring Tehran's disputed nuclear program, and reaching a negotiated end to the war launched on February 28. Iranian media reported that two cities were attacked: Bandar Abbas and Qeshm. Meanwhile, the United States military, under the auspices of US Central Command (CENTCOM), reported the attack on Iran. CENTCOM stated that the US has begun conducting a forceful attack on Iran and is targeting the Iranian attack on the crew of a commercial cargo ship, which is an international civilian. CENTCOM said the aggression directed at Iran was unprovoked, dangerous, and a clear violation of the ceasefire. Iran reportedly immediately retaliated against the United States' attacks on Bandar Abbas and Qeshm.
