We kick off today’s farm operations at our newly established farm in Hof Bergmann, setting our sights on building a successful and sustainable operation. After a quick inspection of the facilities, we prioritize goat herd management, ensuring our goats are well-fed and comfortable. To meet their needs, we prepare for a hay harvest using tractors and specialized equipment. We start by mowing and tedding the grass to accelerate drying, followed by raking the hay into neat windrows. Once the hay is ready, we use a forage wagon to collect it and transport it to the hay storage facility. From there, we load the hay into the tractor’s compartment and deliver it directly to the goat feeding trough. But the goats don’t just need food — they need bedding material too. Luckily, our wheat fields are ripe, so we mobilize our combine harvester and head to the fields for a full-scale wheat harvest. After cutting and collecting the grain, we bale the leftover straw, load it onto a flatbed trailer, and deliver the bales to the straw storage area. We then bring a bale to the goat barn, where it’s dismantled and spread as bedding to keep the herd comfortable and healthy. Finally, we transport the harvested wheat to the local mill and kick off flour production to diversify our farm’s output.
