102° Targa Florio Classica 2018 ACI Storico Grandi Eventi ACI 2018 ACI Sport Magazine
102nd Targa Florio Classica 2018 ACI Storico Grandi Eventi ACI 2018 A significant milestone in the history of motor racing, the Targa Florio Classica, sponsored by ACI Storico (*), commemorates the most legendary race in the world. This 2018 edition combines tradition, culture, and thrills, distinguishing itself for the extraordinary quality of the venues and locations it hosts. Registration applications for the 2018 Targa Florio Classica, the final round of the Italian Grandi Eventi Championship, are open. Approximately 150 crews have registered to date, including those from the Ferrari Tribute to Targa Florio, one of the Prancing Horse's official events, inviting customers of cars from all eras to participate in the challenging Sicilian race. In addition to the Italian crews, there are numerous entries from all five continents, including Spanish and English teams, followed by Swiss, German, and Dutch teams, as well as teams from North and South America (the United States and Argentina, respectively), not to mention entries from Asia (Japan and Hong Kong), South Africa, and Australia, for an event that has been and remains famous throughout the world. Among the most significant vehicles entered in the Targa Florio Classica are a 1927 Lancia Lambda, the oldest of the registered cars, the seventh of nine series of the high-end model considered one of Vincenzo Lancia's two masterpieces; one of the most iconic Alfa Romeos of the 1930s, the Alfa Romeo Gran Sport 6C; the 1930 Alfa Romeo 6C 1750 Gran Sport "Testa Fissa," winner of the Concorso d'Eleganza Poltu Quatu Classic on the Costa Smeralda; Finally, the 1949 Ferrari 166 MM, titled for the Mille Miglia, following the victory of the Clemente Biondetti/Giuseppe Navona duo. In the year commemorating the thirtieth anniversary of the Silver Fox's passing, driver Piero Taruffi, winner of the 1954 Targa Florio in a Lancia 3300, and his daughter Prisca, who combines journalism with racing, will participate in the 2018 Targa Florio Classica, navigated by Mariella Tomasello in a 1961 Giulietta Spider. The city of Palermo, the 2018 Italian Capital of Culture, will be the fulcrum of the route, which will visit Sicily's most evocative and historic sites, a hallmark of the "Cursa." The Targa's headquarters are located at the Motor Museum of the University of Palermo Museum System, a long-time active partner of the Targa Florio event. The program includes a press conference on Wednesday, October 3rd, at 11:30 a.m. at Palazzo Chiaramonte Steri, seat of the Rectorate of the University of Palermo in Piazza Marina. On Thursday, October 4th, the starting ceremony will begin at 6:30 p.m. from the central Piazza Verdi, where the Targa Florio Village will be set up: a true exhibition space that will complement the magic and excitement of the Targa Florio. On Friday, October 5th, the caravan will move from Palermo toward the coastal area of the Trapani province, retracing Garibaldi's historic route in reverse until reaching Marsala, where a stop at the renowned Cantine Florio winery is planned. The return journey, toward Palermo, will pass through the historic salt pans, which reach their peak splendor in October. On Saturday, October 6th, the Targa will travel the legendary roads of the Madonie National Park, retracing the eponymous circuit that made the race most famous. It begins with a stop in Floriopoli, home to the historic grandstands and old pits, and passes through the municipality of Cerda, the ancient fortress of Caltavuturo, Petralia, a break in Castelbuono (with its splendid Cloister of St. Francis), and the return stages, passing through other unforgettable towns such as the "pearl of the Tyrrhenian Sea," Cefalù, with its Piazza del Duomo, a UNESCO World Heritage site. This will be followed by a stop in Termini Imerese and the return to Palermo. On Sunday, October 7, the race will take place in the Palermo area: after the timed trial hosted by the University of Palermo, the average speed trial will take place in the Monreale area and the re-enactment of the Favorita Circuit (valid for the Targa Florio from 1937 to 1940) until the return to the heart of Palermo, with the awards ceremony at 3:30 pm at the “Teatro Al Massimo”.
