News at Ten, 2 May 1997
Here is Trevor McDonald with the News at Ten from ITN on Friday 2 May 1997 - with the results of the general election. Michael Brunson shows Tony Blair's journey from Islington to Buckingham Palace and then to Downing Street, while John Major goes to the Oval after handing over the seals of office. Hugh Pym introduces the new Cabinet. Tim Ewart then recaps the election night drama, and Robert Moore comments on the forthcoming Conservative leadership election. The last constituency to declare is Winchester which goes to the Liberal Democrats; Richard Lindley shows their successes. In part two Norman Rees speaks to Christopher Leslie who has at the age of 24 unexpectedly beaten Tory grandee Sir Marcus Fox. (The gap in the middle of this report is due to the tape running out.) David Rose shows the result from Scotland, and John Irvine has news of Sinn Féin successes in Northern Ireland. Jo Andrews speculates on how 10 Downing Street will cope with the Blair family. Michael Brunson then comments on the new situation of British politics. At the end the events of the day are set to music.
