Neil Kinnock’s Battle with the Militant Left: The Speech That Changed Labour
The year is 1985 and the Labour leader Neil Kinnock is about to make a speech that will alter the future of the Labour Party. He steps up at the party conference and in one of the greatest speeches in history takes on the powerful left wing of his party, with several of its most powerful members in the audience. Francis Beckett journalist, playwright, author and former Labour Press Officer takes us through the dramatic scenes which ultimately led Mr Kinnock to take full control of his party. Although he would not win an election himself, Beckett argues that Neil Kinnock's reforms ultimately led to a return to power under Tony Blair. ⬇️ Follow i for the best in news and analysis. ⬇️ https://inews.co.uk/ Facebook: / theipaper Instagram: / theipaper Twitter: / theipaper TikTok: / theipaper LinkedIn: / the-i-paper Chapters: 0:00 - 1:19: Introduction 1:19 - 2:55: Neil Kinnock As An Orator 2:55 - 4:08: Party Conference Speeches 4:08 - 7:25: The Grotesque Chaos & The Militant Tendency 7:25 - 8:41: The Drama In The Room 8:41 - 9:42: Why The Speech Is So Good 9:42 - 10:57: 'I Owe This Party Every Life Chance' 10:57 - 12:37: The Speeches' Legacy #politics #ukpolitics #labour
