"Die Vielfalt ist der Leuchtturm" – was Gisbert Wundram und Kay Dammholz mit DFB.TV vorhaben.
“We want to bring entirely new aspects of football into the spotlight,” explains Kay Dammholz in the turi2 podcast. He is responsible for sports rights at the German Football Association (DFB) and is launching DFB.TV on Friday. Dammholz also serves as Managing Director of the new pay-TV channel, a joint venture with the sports digital operator Sportainment. In the podcast interview with turi2 editor-in-chief Markus Trantow, Dammholz and Sportainment CEO Gisbert Wundram explain that they are deliberately staying out of the bidding wars for major football rights. They want to create a platform for rights “that wouldn’t be able to find a buyer on their own,” says Dammholz. Wundram adds: “We don’t have one flagship right around which everything else is built. Instead, diversity is the lighthouse.” The founder of Sportainment has experience with the commercial marketing of niche sports rights through his sports digital channels. DFB.TV is a pay-TV channel, but most fans who already have a subscription to one of the sports pay services probably won't have to pay anything extra to watch the linear programming, as it will be included in the packages of Vodafone, DAZN, HD+, and Zattoo right from the start. Wundram says they are "in advanced talks" with Sky and Magenta. For those who want to access DFB.TV without a pay-TV subscription, there's an app that costs just under €6 per month or just under €60 per year. The podcast discusses the content of the first few weeks of broadcasting, the business model, marketing, and the prospects for the channel, which goes on air this Friday at 3:30 p.m. Kay Dammholz hopes that DFB.TV will be "the go-to service for every football fan" within a year.
