The Scarlet Letter - Full Audiobook
"If truth were everywhere to be shown, a scarlet letter would blaze forth on many a bosom..." Here is my original recording of Nathaniel Hawthorne's The Scarlet Letter, originally published in 1850, as well as the introductory framing story The Customs House. Having read much of the classic American literary cannon, I will say that I still find The Scarlet Letter to be particularly challenging. There is something so lonely and isolating about Hester's journey that can make it hard to fully engage with the story. But this also speaks to the tremendous success of the work, that Hawthorne has rendered her condition so painfully, that it can be hard to bear. For students who are struggling to engage with this book, I strongly recommend researching or watching a documentary about the time period the novel is set in, as it can be very challenging to grasp the social norms and customs that now feel so far from our own.
