A Princess of Mars - Full Audio Book

“I shall have to believe even though I cannot understand...” Here is my original recording of Edgar Rice Burroughs’ famous science fiction story, A Princess of Mars. This book was originally published in 1912 in serialized form in All Story Magazine. I was personally amazed by the tremendous similarities between this, and more well known science fiction stories like Star Wars that came much later. Even more interesting to me were the reverberations of epic storytelling in the work, that go far further back into the western canon such as Beowulf and Homer’s Odyssey. The story of the epic hero who always ends up on top is deeply embedded in our history of storytelling. Furthermore, Edgar Rice Burroughs, despite having been born in Chicago in 1875, chose to make the main character of this story a confederate soldier from Virginia who expresses racism towards Native Americans in the first few chapters of the book. His potential reasons for doing this and the comparisons he draws to the main character's treatment of different peoples of Mars, I leave for the listener to judge for themselves.
