I've been waiting two years for this moment. My 14-inch tire track eel, Eel Longoria, has finally grown large enough to make the move from Rikers Island — my Landen 72 gallon rimless — to San Quentin, my 10-foot 435 gallon American cichlid tank. But can she survive in a tank full of aggressive cichlids? That's the question keeping this warden up at night. Also making the transfer: Benson, my 4-inch Hoplarchus psittacus true parrot cichlid, who is about to meet Buck — the 10-inch true parrot tank boss of San Quentin. And the Pearl cichlid, a Geophagus brasiliensis with a serious attitude problem. Inmates already doing time in San Quentin include Kevin the Herichthys carpintis, Percy the oscar cichlid, Buck the Hoplarchus psittacus, Lunchbox the Nandopsis haitiensis black nasty cichlid, Dick and Dan the Satanoperca jurupari, and a full cast of supporting psychopaths.
