Bahnverkehr in Lüneburg mit ICE 1, 4 & T, Metronom Br 146 + Dostos, Güterzügen, Intercity und Br 648

Lüneburg is a city with approx. 75,000 inhabitants in northeast Lower Saxony, 43km southeast of Hamburg. The station consisted of two stations, Lüneburg-Ost and Lüneburg-West. The Lüneburg-Ost station was opened in 1847 and is the largest part of the station today, on the Hamburg - Hanover railway line. The route to Lübeck also begins here. The Lüneburg-West train station was opened in 1874 on the Wittenberge - Buchholz (Nordheide) line. Today the railway line only exists in the Lüneburg - Dannenberg Ost section and is known as the Wendland Railway. Today Lüneburg-West is only part of the Lüneburg railway station. The depot was continuously reduced in size from 1960 and dissolved in 1983. A side platform and two island platforms with a total of five tracks are available for passenger traffic in the main part of the station. Tracks 1 and 2 are used by the RE3, ICE and IC trains. Track 3 is mainly used as a passing track and is also used regularly by RE3. Tracks 4 & 5 are used by trains from and towards Lübeck. In the Lüneburg-West section of the station, there is now only one side platform available for passenger traffic, which is divided into platforms 6 & 7. This division often leads to confusion for non-residents. I was able to observe this myself during my visit when transfer passengers came from the other part of the station, stood in front of the regional train to Hamburg (platform 6) and then looked for platform 7, from which the train to Wendland leaves. In addition to the local trains, many ICE and Intercity trains also stop in Lüneburg.
