Step aboard with us on five trains that take you along five of the most beautiful mountain passes in Europe. We start in Austria with the Schafbergbahn. This cogwheel railway is the steepest in the country and climbs nearly 1,200 meters in just 35 minutes. During its construction, more than 600 mules were used to transport materials up the mountain. At the summit, a stunning view awaits — provided the fog allows it, which unfortunately wasn’t entirely the case for us. Next, we travel through Switzerland on the Mont Blanc Express. We depart from Martigny, at the foot of Mont Blanc, and after the first climb transfer to a panoramic train. The altitude doesn’t increase much further, but the scenery is absolutely breathtaking. Our third journey takes us through the white, desolate landscapes of the Bergen Railway in Norway — famous for scenes filmed for Star Wars: Episode V – The Empire Strikes Back (the planet Hoth). We then descend spectacularly on the Flåm Railway, one of the steepest railway lines in the world. Back in Switzerland, the Pilatus Railway awaits. Opened in 1889 and also built with the help of mules, this cogwheel railway is the steepest in the world with a gradient of up to 48%. We finish in France. From Grenoble we travel to Clelles, where we board Le Petit Train de La Mure. Crossing arch bridges and passing impressive viewpoints, this train takes us through the beautiful French Alps.
