In this episode, we take a journey back in time. In the north of Austria, we begin in historic Freistadt, a city that grew wealthy thanks to trade and the so-called staple right. The transport of salt, in particular, played a major role here. Even before the arrival of the steam train, this transport took place via the unique Pferde-Eisenbahn, one of the first railway lines on the European mainland where wagons were pulled by horses. This early form of rail transport represented a huge advance: travel became faster and more comfortable than by stagecoach. Nevertheless, the horse railway eventually disappeared due to the rise of the steam train. What remains is a tangible reminder of the beginning of railway history in Austria. That history comes to life on the museum line of the Steyrtalbahn. From charming Steyr, a city that once flourished through the iron trade, we depart by steam train towards Grünburg. The train runs on narrow gauge tracks along the River Steyr, pulled by a locomotive from 1888 — the oldest still-operating of its kind in the country. After this journey through the past, we travel on to Sankt Wolfgang, idyllically situated on Lake Wolfgang. This village, with its long traditions and location between mountains and water, has been attracting visitors and pilgrims for centuries. The atmosphere of authentic Austria is still palpable here. The highlight of the trip is a ride on the famous Schafbergbahn. This steep cogwheel railway takes us peacefully up into the mountains.
