Every car has a high-performance lighting system. It is legally required to have a mechanism for the driver to switch between high and low beams. This mechanism allows for a higher beam that illuminates more than 20 meters ahead but obscures oncoming drivers. To avoid this discomfort, low beams are used, where the illumination is limited but allows for a view of the road until the other vehicle passes. In most cars, switching between headlights is done simply by using the turn signal switch on the steering wheel lever. In the Beetle, there is also a headlight switch relay to assist in this process. The Beetle's headlight relay, as it's called, receives a low-power signal from the turn signal switch and sends the high-power signal to the high-beam and low-beam bulbs alternately. All Beetles have this system, and without the Beetle's headlight relay, or if it's defective, the headlights won't work. It has 5 pins: 30, battery positive, S, turn signal signal, 56, receives a positive signal when the headlight switch is activated, 56a goes to the low-beam bulb, and F goes to the high-beam bulb.
