Tra bene e male: una RESPONSABILITÀ umana | UMANITÀ in Orbita - FILOSOFIA con Luciano Floridi
In this new episode of Orbits - Luciano Floridi, we explore one of the oldest and most pressing questions in philosophy: why does moral evil exist, and how can we address it? Through a journey from Socrates to contemporary challenges, we analyze human nature and the strategies societies have developed to contain destructive behavior. At the heart of the reflection are two complementary anthropological visions: the Socratic one, which sees human beings as fundamentally good but ignorant, and the Hobbesian one, which describes them as intelligent but selfish. The truth, according to Luciano Floridi, is that we are both: "we walk on two legs," alternating moments of naive goodness and predatory cunning. From this dual nature arises the need for two complementary tools: paideia, or education, to illuminate our ignorance, and nomos, or laws, to contain our destructive impulses. A society based solely on rules without moral education is doomed to collapse. Conversely, a society of educated "angels" could theoretically survive with few laws, but would still need them for collective coordination. The lesson for the present is therefore clear. In the face of contemporary democratic crises, we will desperately need greater coordination and cooperation, as well as a little more good philosophy. ORBITS - Luciano Floridi is a project conceived by Action Agency and Luciano Floridi, within Orbits, a unique platform for informed and interdisciplinary dialogue to understand, analyze, and manage the transformations linked to the digital revolution and artificial intelligence.
