They are between 15 and 20 years old. Their dream: to become farmers. For several months, the magazine followed Malohé, Jeanne, Jérémy, and Evan, four students at the agricultural high school in Fontaines, Saône-et-Loire. While some dream of an easy life and well-paid jobs, these high school students are making a completely different choice. They are embarking on a sector in crisis and already know they will struggle to earn a comfortable income. Malohé is 15 years old. Nothing predestined her for this life. At home, there was no farm, no tractor. Just a work experience placement in middle school. And a revelation: one day, she will have her own livestock. Evan, too, comes from a different world. His vocation was born during lockdown. As the country ground to a halt, he discovered his neighbor's farm, and the neighbor took him under his wing. For Jérémy, a 16-year-old vocational high school sophomore, farming isn't a new discovery; it's an inheritance, like his father's and his grandfather's before him. But two years ago, his father died in an accident after falling from the farmhouse roof. Since then, he's had to carry on, learn, and grow up faster. The farm now rests on his shoulders and his mother's. Jeanne, on the other hand, knows this life all too well. A fifth-generation farmer, she watched her father's exhaustion and refuses to repeat the same pattern. She wants to change the rules, question working conditions, and assert women's place. To be a "farmer," she says proudly, independent and never in anyone's shadow. What motivates them, and how are they trained in the era of climate change and Mercosur?
