Alone in the Taiga: The family who returned after soviet collapse | SLICE
Deep in the Siberian taiga lies the abandoned village of Tvaïan. Fifty years ago, this remote settlement was a Soviet state farm, or sovkhoz, complete with a school, a post office, and dozens of residents working the surrounding land. But in the 1970s the farm became unprofitable. The Soviet authorities gradually lost interest in the settlement and eventually abandoned it. One by one, the villagers left. Today, only one family remains. Daria and her children are the last inhabitants of this forgotten place. After the collapse of the Soviet Union, she chose to return to the forest and reconnect with the traditional life of her ancestors. Cut off from modern society, the family survives thanks to hunting, fishing, and the resources of the forest. Summer is spent gathering food and exploring the rivers, while winter brings harsh conditions and scarce wildlife. In this remote corner of Siberia, far from cities and modern comforts, Daria and her family continue to live between the legacy of the Soviet era and the ancient rhythms of the taiga.
