A hall of gold. Meat that never runs out. Mead that never empties. Brothers on every bench, and no morning after. It was the best death a man could hope for. Fall with a blade in your hand, and the gods themselves send for you. Nobody ever told them what the feasting was for. Because Valhalla was never a reward. It was a recruiting hall. And the man handing out the invitations already knew he was going to lose. Start with the sell, because the sell was genuinely brilliant. Almost everything we know about Valhalla comes from two sources: the Poetic Edda, a collection of old verse copied into a manuscript around the year 1270, and the Prose Edda, written by the Icelandic chieftain Snorri Sturluson about fifty years earlier. And in those pages, the hall has a name. Valhöll. The hall of the slain. The roof is thatched with golden shields. A wolf hangs over the western door. Spears hold up the rafters. Inside, the tables never empty — and here is where the promise gets almost impossibly good. There is a boar in that hall. Every day it is slaughtered and cooked and eaten down to the bone by the entire army of the dead — and every evening it is whole again, alive again, ready to be eaten again tomorrow. Infinite meat. And on the roof stands a goat that eats from the branches of a great tree, and from that goat flows mead — not milk, mead — enough to fill every horn in the hall, forever. Endless food. Endless drink. Endless company. To a farmer freezing in a longhouse through a Scandinavian winter, this wasn't just heaven. It was everything scarcity had ever denied him, promised without limit. So of course men wanted in. That was the entire point. But paradise doesn't need a recruitment drive. And this one had one. Which raises the first question that breaks the whole thing open. Who, exactly, gets in — and who does the choosing? You did not simply arrive in Valhalla. You were selected. And the ones doing the selecting are the most misremembered figures in all of Norse myth. The valkyries. Popular culture turned them into angelic maidens who carry brave souls to their reward. The old word is colder than that. Valkyrja. It means "chooser of the slain." They are not there to comfort the dying. They are there to walk the battlefield while men are still bleeding out and decide, right there, which of them Odin wants. They are talent scouts. And they are working a battlefield. Think about what that word admits out loud. You don't need a "chooser of the slain" for a feast. You choose guests for a feast by whether you like them. You choose the slain when you are filling a roster. When you need specific men, with specific skills, in specific numbers. And the man they answer to has another name most people never learn.
