These fibers are environmentally friendly and are made from naturally occurring basalt rock. These basalt rocks are melted at about 2,500 degrees Fahrenheit to form ultra-thin micro strands. Two hundred of these micro strands form one thread of basalt stone fiber. The resulting product is a lightweight, durable, and very strong material. Basalt stone fibers boast an industry leading strength-to-weight ratio exceeding 3 times the strength of steel. Unlike metals, Basalt Stone Fibers do not succumb to corrosion and have a much higher chemical resistance against water, oils, salts, acids, solvents, and alkalis. Materials based on basalt fiber have the following important properties: porosity, temperature resistance, chemical resistance and water vapor permeability. Porosity of materials made from basalt fiber can reach up to 75% of their volume. If the pores of the material are filled with air, then it has low heat conductivity. Due to all these properties Basalt Stone Fibers & materials derived from them are increasingly being utilized as rebar in building reinforcement, strengthening agents in concrete mixtures, thermal insulation, industrial filters, and many more.
