Seminar on Mastering the Core Islamic Sciences with Dr. Hamza al-Bakri & Dr. Omar Qureshi
The sciences of credal beliefs (Aqa’id) and rational theology (Kalam) stand at the very foundation of Islamic learning, yet their scope, methodology, and relationship to one another remain unclear to many seekers of knowledge today. This seminar addresses a crucial gap by providing participants with a comprehensive map of these disciplines—their scope, how they function within the broader architecture of Islamic sciences, and where their boundaries overlap and diverge. Attendees will discover the canonical texts that have defined each discipline, understand what purposes they serve, and gain insight into both historical curricula and contemporary considerations for navigating these fields in our time. The program grounds these disciplines in the context of their ultimate purposes: defining sound belief, protecting against doctrinal confusion, and equipping students with the rational and scriptural tools to think and speak clearly about God, prophethood, revelation, and the hereafter. By the end, participants will not only perceive the place of these sciences within the broader Islamic intellectual tradition but will also know how to approach them, which works to prioritize, and how to deploy this knowledge in our modern age. This seminar, the first in a series of ‘Mastering the Islamic Sciences’ for students of Sacred Knowledge, offers both local attendees and online participants a rare opportunity to gain systematic clarity on the foundational sciences that have shaped Muslim thought for over a millennium. Sheikh Dr Hamza al-Bakri is a prolific scholar, author, and academic, specialising in Hadith and Kalam. He acquired his Ph.D. in Hadith Studies from the University of Jordan, and is the author of numerous works, including The Multiplicity of the Incident in the Narrations of Prophetic Hadith (Ta‘addud al-Hadith fi Riwayat al-Hadith al-Nabawi)”, “The Nature of the Sciences of Hadith and Contemporary Critical Trends (Mahiyyat ‘Ulum al-Hadith wa al-Ittijahat al-Naqdiyya al-Mu‘asira)”. Dr al-Bakri is Assistant Professor at the Faculty of Theology at Istanbul University and chairman of the Academic Committee for the “Tamkin Program“ at SeekersGuidance, and has previously taught at Ibn Khaldun University and Fatih Sultan Mehmet Vakıf University (FSMVU). Sheikh Dr Omar Qureshi is a scholar of the traditional Islamic disciplines and a professional educationalist. He has a Bachelor of Arts in Microbiology, an M.Ed. in Curriculum and Instruction (Science Education), and a Ph.D. in Cultural and Educational Policy Studies, and studied the full traditional curriculum of Islamic sciences in Syria, Arabia, and North America. His dissertation, entitled “Badr al-Dīn Ibn Jamāʿah and the Highest Good of Islamic Education”, treats the topic of educational institutional identity in the United States. Dr Qureshi is Director of Integrated Curriculum at Yaqeen Institute for Islamic Research, and has previously served as the principal and dean of academics in Chicago, provost and assistant professor of Liberal and Islamic Studies at Zaytuna College, and head of the Contextual Islamic Studies and Leadership (CISL) Diploma at Cambridge Muslim College.
