Curator Tour | Chua Mia Tee: Directing the Real “The painter must assume the role of the actor, scriptwriter and director to freely shape the subject’s image.” —Chua Mia Tee, 1978 In this video tour featuring exhibition curators Clarissa Chikiamco and Lim Shujuan, delve into key artworks such as “Epic Poem of Malaya” (1955), “Road Construction Worker” (1955), and “Workers in a Canteen” (1974) from Chua’s early practice. Explore how he carefully constructed some of his most recognisable artworks to chart Singapore’s journey and reflect the diverse groups of people who have contributed to its story. -- About the Curators Clarissa Chikiamco is Curator at National Gallery Singapore. Her past exhibitions at the Gallery include “Between Declarations and Dreams: Art of Southeast Asia since the 19th Century”, “A Fact Has No Appearance: Art Beyond the Object”, “Between Worlds: Raden Saleh and Juan Luna” and “Nam June Paik: The Future is Now”. She is currently a PhD candidate in Film Studies at King’s College London. Lim Shujuan is Curator at National Gallery Singapore. Her research interests include the histories of artists in Singapore from 19th century to 1965, and exploring the multi-nodal connections between art and architecture. Previous exhibitions that she worked on include the long-term display “Siapa Nama Kamu?
