Scotland Released 82 Eagles Into a Dead Isle — What They Did With Fish and Cliffs Was Unbelievable
🌿 Rewild Your Backyard — Field Guide → https://nature-recode-vault.pages.dev In 1918, a gamekeeper shot the last white-tailed eagle in Scotland. He was paid to do it. By then, three centuries of systematic bounty hunting had reduced Britain's largest bird of prey to a handful of pairs on the most remote islands — and then to none. For fifty-seven years, the cliffs of the Scottish coast held no eagle. The lochs had nothing hunting them from above. In 1975, four eaglets were flown from Norway and released on the Isle of Rum. Nobody knew if it would work — two previous attempts had failed when the birds were shot illegally. What happened next was faster and stranger than any model predicted. The eagles found Scotland in three weeks. They recognised it without ever having seen it. And in 1985, a female named Blondie hatched the first wild eagle chick in Britain in more than seventy years — on an island nobody had directed her to. Today, Scotland has 150 breeding pairs. The Isle of Mull generates up to £8 million a year from eagle tourism. The gamekeepers' descendants run the boats.
