Today, on the cusp of the third millennium, when the celebration of the birth of Jesus is confused with Santa's birthday, when the prevailing economic model in our America makes us mere satellites of the northern country, which bombards us with the consumerist virus, when thanks to so-called technological progress our children have already lost much of their innocence and capacity for wonder because of television, when we no longer know if it's more important to say "I love you" or "I don't have enough money for the lyrics," when our flag, bastion and emblem, accepted and recognized as one of the most beautiful in the world, timidly and shamefully displays a "Made in Taiwan" label, when a reconquest is looming, now through large Iberian capital, when the territorial rights of those who waged one of the largest and bloodiest wars in human memory are still not fully recognized, when a large part of our youth are engulfed and ravaged by the unsustainable scourge of drugs and not They don't care about anything, when we have become slaves to the clock, to our meager and superficial material achievements, when flowery contests have had to be invented to keep our acrobatic cueca alive, when in my beautiful country we must, inexplicably, wait for the death of someone who has given everything to cynically put on faces of sorrow and reflection making posthumous tributes, when the wounds caused by the rifle bullet in the hands of the wrong man have not yet healed, when the news bombards us with stupid, pessimistic and backstabbing news, when the people, the common and wild being of this land have lost faith and are infected by the icy indifference, when the inconsistent and the chameleons sprout like a plague, the Popular Poet, the Singer, the Payador stands up, striving and scarce; Whether rural or urban, but with the irreplaceable flavor of our land, which, despite the vicissitudes and upheavals that fate has in store, always offers its unique spark and wit, possessed only by the Chilean Roto; and which I have sought to capture in this work. Today, the Poet, Singer, and Payador is no longer the ugly duckling of the family and has earned the respect of a society almost ashamed of our folklore. However, Popular Poetry is reclaiming its rightful place with renewed vitality, thanks to our past and present practitioners who have generously bequeathed us their essence. Therefore, this humble tribute is offered to each and every one of them for allowing me to be another link in this long chain that cradles this centuries-old tradition.
