Higashihiroshima City was formed in 1974 when the towns of Saijo, Yahonmatsu, Shiwa, and Takaya merged. In 2005, the city expanded with the addition of the towns of Kurose, Kawachi, Fukutomi, Toyosaka, and Akizu, bringing the city to the Seto Inland Sea. Saijo, where City Hall is located, is blessed with an ideal environment for sake brewing and has flourished as a sake-producing town. It is known as one of Japan's three great sake-producing regions, alongside Nada in Kobe and Fushimi in Kyoto. Akizu, facing the Seto Inland Sea, is said to be the birthplace of ginjo sake, making Higashihiroshima City a sake town. The main campus of Hiroshima University moved from its Higashi-Senda campus in Hiroshima City to its Higashi-Hiroshima campus in the 1980s, and the Kinki University Faculty of Engineering campus is located near Nishi-Takaya Station. The city also boasts a strong academic character, with the Hiroshima Central Science Park and numerous industrial parks being developed within the city. The population is on the rise due to residential development as a commuter town, centered around the Saijo, Hachihonmatsu, and Takaya areas, all within commuting distance of Hiroshima City.
