Higashihiroshima City was formed in 1974 when the towns of Saijo, Yahonmatsu, Shiwa, and Takaya merged. In 2005, the city expanded with the addition of the towns of Kurose, Kawachi, Fukutomi, Toyosaka, and Akizu, bringing the city to the Seto Inland Sea. Saijo, where City Hall is located, is blessed with an ideal environment for sake brewing and has flourished as a sake-producing town. The main campus of Hiroshima University moved from its Higashi-Senda campus in Hiroshima City to its Higashi-Hiroshima campus in the 1980s, and the Kinki University Faculty of Engineering campus is located near Nishi-Takaya Station. The city also boasts a strong academic character, with the Hiroshima Central Science Park and numerous industrial parks being developed within the city.
