Occupying 12 square kilometres of the North African coast - 6 hours sailing time from mainland Europe - Melilla is without doubt Spain's most unique city. Sadly its only appearances in the news tend to portray a city on the front-line of migration from sub-Saharan Africa. Yet that is not an accurate picture of a proud community where the languages of Spain and North Africa mix peacefully in the cafes and bars. The city boasts centuries of history as well as a concentration of Modernist architecture second only to Barcelona. This short guide will take you on a tour of Melilla La Vieja (the fortress where the city began), through the parks and elegant streets, and finally to the heavily fortified border.
