May 25, 1961 - President John F. Kennedy's Special Message to the Congress on Urgent National Needs
On May 25, 1961, President John F. Kennedy appeared before a special joint session of Congress to discuss the goal of sending men to the Moon before the end of the decade. NASA’s human spaceflight programs were guided by this speech; projects Mercury, Gemini, and Apollo were all designed with Kennedy’s goal in mind. This goal was achieved on July 20, 1969, when Apollo 11 landed on the Moon. President John F. Kennedy: US will aim to put the first man on the Moon by the end of the decade.
