On g5 it is potentially exposed, but it does hinder Black's play (no easy ...e7-e6; the possibility of Bg5xf6 should Black develop the kingside knight). Here a typical middlegame structures arises where White is prosecuting a pawn break with a2-a4 and b2-b4-b5, whereas Black seeks his chances in the center with the ...e7-e5 break.
